Updated 3-11-2026 8:44AM – In an effort to strengthen their understanding of mental health care and psychiatric nursing, the Nursing Program of CHCCI recently conducted a Related Learning Experience (R.L.E.) trip to the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH). The activity served as an important learning opportunity for nursing students, allowing them to witness firsthand the realities, challenges, and compassionate care involved in mental health services.

The visit aimed to bridge classroom theories with real-world practice. Throughout the activity, students were introduced to the different facilities and services offered by the institution, which plays a crucial role in providing mental health care and rehabilitation to patients from across the region. The experience allowed the future nurses to gain deeper insight into the holistic approach required in handling individuals with mental health conditions.

Guided by health professionals from the center, the CHCCI nursing students learned about patient care protocols, therapeutic communication, and the importance of empathy and respect in psychiatric nursing. The orientation also highlighted the role of multidisciplinary teams in addressing mental health concerns, emphasizing collaboration among doctors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers.

For many students, the visit was both eye-opening and inspiring. Seeing the dedication of healthcare professionals working in the mental health sector reinforced the students’ commitment to their chosen profession. It also helped them better understand the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting compassion in healthcare.

The exposure trip stands as a meaningful step in the academic and professional journey of CHCCI nursing students. By stepping beyond the classroom and into real healthcare environments, they continue to develop not only their clinical knowledge but also the empathy and humanity essential to becoming competent and compassionate nurses.
